Did anyone hike threw the construction on the AT north of Atkins VA this year. I was working on that project and was very disappointed in the fact we crossed the AT. I made it a priority to keep it clean as possible. But tons of rain made it hard. Let me know your opinion. The construction was from June-Sept.

Mattitude…My partner and I hiked thru that area the last part of April early May.It had been pouring down rain ,and then thunder and lightening when we stopped at the Settlers Museum.By the time we reached that area it was soaking. The traffice was down to one lane in that area due to construction.
You and your project people did a great job of keeping it clean, and we had no problems.
My home town(Wytheville) is just north of there.:cheers

I didn’t even notice it.

I remember one area where they seemed to be changing the road and I hiked through a lot of mud for a ways. I had been hiking in plenty of mud anyway, so it wasn’t that different, just you could tell that it was meant to be a road change.

the road construction you are talking about was a little ways before my project. The pipeline project I was on was on the North Side of I-81 out in the pastures. I was living only a few miles from the trail and never saw a hiker all summer. I even went to the laundry and grocery in Atkins to see if I could give a ride a few times and no hikers there. I even went and sat at DQ reading a few times to see someone, to no avail!

Maybe it was pipeline construction and I just thought it was a road… I also remember the road work being done at the road by I81 at the DQ. I can’t believe you never found any hikers at the DQ! Everyone who hiked with me that June day stopped. We practically ran down the hill in anticipation! Of course, then they had to hurry to get up the road to the shelter. I also ate at the restaurant on the opposite corner and met several hikers a few days before I hiked the area. They were staying at that little motel. Maybe you’ll have better luck next year.
