Would I need crampons or other slip-on spikes to hike next month in the Smokies? I will hike from Clingman’s Dome to Hot Springs-leaving on Feb 20. Thanks for the advice.

Not really, no. The west side of the ridge going down to the gap from the dome is always in the shade and has ice all over it from the stream/trail water run off. A great place to crash and burn. Rock hop around it. The rest of the trail is fine even when snowy. Save a few ounces, or swap that weight for a few extra Hershey bars.

I just hiked that section of the SNP there was sloped drifts with glaze ice in spots. Iput on the crampons 3 times for 300yds at most each time. One place did look bad with a drop off. check around Newfound when you get there if it’s ok then save the weight

You will need some extra traction for your feet in that area. There will be sections of ice covered trail like george mentioned. You could negotiate it, but could really slow you down and be dangerous. I’ve seen people slip and fall on ice covered trails in the Smokies. Crampons are overkill and very heavy. Yaktrax work really well. They weigh a few ounces, don’t cost much, easy on and off and do not have sharp points so they can be packed anywhere in your backpack. Hope this helps.

What’s this I hear about crampons all over the mountain. When you are done with your crampons make sure to put them in a baggie and carry them out with you. Don’t leave them behind for other people to deal with.
Oh! What’s that? Never mind.
