Crampons? - Appalachian Trail

Hey Guys,
I’m starting on March 1st, so I know the possiblity of running into snow and ice is probable. A friend of mine suggested that I bring crampons to start out the hike. Is this really necessary?

No, crampons aren’t something you need. There might be a (very) few short icy stretches that some instep crampons would be nice on, but nothing a pair of sticks/poles won’t get you through. You’ll see far more slush and mud than slippery ice in cold weather. In hindsight, I would have really liked to have a pair of mid gaiters in NC/TN for walking through a bit of “wintery mix,” so you might think about those instead. Dry socks are always nice too. Have fun!
