CT hike in late September: weather?

What is the weather like on the eastern portions of the Colorado Trail in early autumn? I may do a hike at that time for several weeks, leaving from Waterton Canyon and getting as far as I can in time allotted.

Chances are you’ll get some snow sometime in the month. It will likely melt pretty fast, but could be anything from an inch to a foot. You’ll have some lovely sunny days and some very very cold ones. Night temps will likely get below freezing.

Agree with Autumn. September is reported as really good by users who are not freaked-out by the first fleeting snow stormss or the colder temps. If you welcome those things, guessing you enjoy it immensely.

Do the noon thunderstorms diminish by autumn?

Yes, although during the transition season some of these storms can put down more graupel or sleet/snow than rain and lightning, often with brief whiteout conditions and maybe even a few inches of the white stuff on the ground. Frontal-type systems also become more common, and that’s the bigger concern in terms of potentially seeing some heavier snowfalls.
