CT info - The Colorado Trail

imported
#1

This past week, met with a friend at local coffee shop
here in Boulder and we talked about my CT adventure
for three hours. As he plans on doing it this summer,
it was helpful.

I also thought “I should write all this stuff down”.
Since I plan on doing a CT workshop at the ALDHA-East
GAthering this year, may as well get it done. Maybe
I’ll catch a red-eye type flight and go to Aldha West
as well.

So, I posted a CT info doc. It is not everything you
need to know about the CT, but is a good place to
start.

The formatting is a little funky in places[1] , but
the info is there and it looks pretty good.
Should be a nice little doc for those planning the
trail.

It is in PDF format, so you need an Adodbe reader
(free download).

If you have questions, let me know.

[1] WARNING GEEKY STUFF AHEAD: Wrote the bulk of it on
Open Office for Red Hat in HTML format, wrote the rest
of it in Word, looked a bit off. Converted it into to
.doc format, converted THAT to a .pdf file. Phew!
Surprised it even came out.

You saved me a lot of work searching different references! I’ve already hiked Molas Pass to Durango, but hope to complete several other section hikes so the shuttle information in your re-supply section is especially helpful for me. Thank you so much.

Thanks for the kind words all.

I should note I updated the doc this weekend. Thanks to Jest Bill from AT-L, I found out about a bus that takes you within 1 mile of the trailhead. Leaves at just before 6am. Early start is good I hear.

As for trouble reading it, is just a standard PDF file. You need the free adobe reader to access it. (wwww.adobe.com). I was able to read this file with Adobe Reader 5.0 and 7.0 on Windows. Also read it with 5.0 on Linux Redhat as well as xpdf (generic pdf reader). Used Firefox on Windows/Linux and Internet Explorer on Windows. So far…so good.

If you go to the root of /miscwritings/ you will not see it. You need to go to the link I posted. You can also access it at:

If you are still having trouble, let me know. I can forward a file in .doc format.

You can find it under my misc writings. The directory itself is not accessible.

What version of Adbobe are you running? I only ask this because so far you are the only person (I know of) who is having trouble. So far, any flavor of abobe runs it OK. (Generic vs. official. Linux vs. Windows. Firefox vs. IE) Could be something corrupt on your computer. I have yet to try it on a Mac, however.

Again, I have it in doc (word) format if you’d like me to send it to you. E-mail: pmags AT yahoo DOT com

Just opened up A-OK on Mac OS X running Safari (and whatever flavor of PDF reader that entails).

So Linux, Windows, Mac OS X - check
Firefox, Safari, IE - check
Various flavors of PDF readers - check

Phew…enough geek talk.

If you are still having problems, I think it is safe to say it is your computer at this point. Could just be an older version of the pdf reader. Not sure. Again, please let me know if you want the file in .doc format.

OK…I lied; more geek talk.

As suspected, you do have an older version of Adobe:

Bad CMap error

The ‘Bad Cmap encoding error’ is seen in earlier versions of Adobe Acrobat reader. The document you are trying to view uses some features which are only supported in more recent versions.

To fix the problem, you can download and install the more recent version of Abode Acrobat reader from their Web site. This is a FREE download:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

Once you download and install this program, you should have no problems reading the PDF file that you have downloaded. You will NOT need to re-download the PDF documents.

Where is the Waterton Canyon???

Chris

Per page 48 of the Colorado Trail Guidebook:

There are several routes to the trailhead at Waterton Canyon. Least confusing is to take !-25 south from Denver trough the suburbs to Colorado Hwy 470. Travel west on Hwy 470 12.5 miles to Hwy-121 (Wadsworth Blvd). Go south (left) on Colorado Hwy 121 for 4.5 miles to where the road officially ends a the entrance to the Lockheed-Martin plant. Turn left off of Hwy-121 and onto a side road marked as “Waterton Canyon.” Continue 0.3 miles following the signs to the large trailhead parking area.

If you look at a Denver map, it is at the south west end of Chatfield State Recreation Area.
