High Sierra Attitude LLC, Guthook Hikes, LLC, and Bear Creek Survey Service LLC have begun development of both IOS and Android smartphone apps for The Colorado Trail. The new CT apps will be based upon “The Colorado Trail Mapbook” waypoint database and will include the latest Collegiate Peaks West alignment plus bicycle detours around wilderness areas. Projected availability date - mid June to early July. To sample what to expect, visit the Apple Itunes App Store or Google Play Store and search “Guthook”.

Sounds awesome. Something I’ve never understood… can the app use satellites for navigation? Otherwise it wouldn’t work if there was no cell service(nor if there was only 1 tower in range) . I don’t know if the new phones have a gps receiver in them. thanks, apple

Cell service is only needed when setting the app up before hiking but not once it is set up. The app uses the smartphone’s built in GPS with maps that are installed on the phone itself. Fairly much like a dedicated GPS receiver. It also contains a digital data book, displays photos of features, and displays elevation profiles.

I used the Guthooks PCT app when I hiked in 2013. It is awesome. If you are like me and have a bit of a distrust of electronic devices, it might be a good idea to carry some paper maps as well. I am going to carry the maps sold by the CTF and was planning on taking a gps. If it is released in time for my CT hike this summer I will definitely get it and use it instead. I am starting July 10th.

Apple - I hope to see you this summer when we pass by.
