Does anyone know if there’s a trailhead with a reasonably safe and legal place to park at Cumbres Pass?
Thanks!

It’s been a few years since I hiked and I’ve never parked there, but I recall some decent places to park around there. I think there are some camping spots along a dirt road as you hike north, too.

I am in Chama as we speak and yes there is a “hidden” area in back of the station at the pass where you can camp and possible leave a car. We left our car with a lady named Silvia in Chama who runs a mini storage and stated she charged $1 per day but charged us nothing to leave our vehicle. If I was going out more than overnight I would feel insecure leaving my car up there unattended although the pass doesn’t get many visitors other than tourists.

I left my truck at the railroad station in Chama for a week recently as I hiked from Ghost Ranch to Wolf Creek and didn’t have a problem. I called before hand and the woman at Cumbres and Toltec RR said no problem.
BTW, there is a shuttle that leaves Chama every Tues and Thur. at 8 am and 1:30 pm that goes south and makes frequent stops at small towns along the way, including Canijlon. And its free. Great way to get close to the trail head south of Chama.

Swannnee, Are you the Swannnee I am hiking with through Colorado? Is this Jan Matson? I was just looking for info about the trail and saw your post. Are you still going to Canada? Snapshot

Jan Matson is Swan. Swannee is from VT and had to go home for a family emergency. Boo Hoo! Oh well, life is not over yet. The CDT will be there for another year (until 12/21/12. HAH!
