Current WA Snow Conditions

Alright, this is a last ditch effort for some last minute advice. Junkfood and I will be leaving Snoqualmie Pass Sunday evening and hiking north to Canada. The snow that stopped us last year seems to have waited for our return, lingering through the summer. We’ve been debating for weeks on rather or not to carry ice axes, trying to get a fix on how much snow remains, and if the extra weight is warrented. Anyone have any advice? First hand recent experience would be preferable but I’ll also take hear-say into consideration. Thanks.

Sorry no first-hand, on-site experience, but are you aware of Postholer’s excellent site? Great snow data on the PCT snow page. www.postholer.com

Thanks, Garlic. I’ve been watching postholer but have heard that it’s not always reliable, especially in Northern Washington, because the sno-tel sensors aren’t where the lingering snow actually is. Also been watching the WTA, just trying to gather as much info as possible to make an educated decision.

The majority of the snow is gone. “Patches” being reported - degree of dificulty depends on your definition of “patch”.

Just completed Rainey Pass to Canadian Border and there are a dozen snow patches that should be melted away in another week. The longest is 20 feet and you can walk around all the patches. It was nice seeing the last few patches of snow alot different from October 1,2007 when I got snowed off the mountain. The flowers are at their max. blossom absolutely beautiful with plenty of water flowing. Carry a little extra water through Harts Pass because the water from the passes horse ranch has a flavor I didn’t care for.
