I have heard that Katahdin may have been closed the last few days (Oct 2,3) due to weather. Has anyone heard this ? Were Hikers allowed to climb today, Oct 5?. Has anyone seen 1/3 near Katahdin.
Thanks

Well, I got an answer to my question right after I wrote the above note. 1/3 called and they had arrived late at the Birches and the weather by that time was so bad they could not summit. Sunday looks sort of bad with the weather getting better on Monday.

I feel for those closing in on Ktaadn and are unsure of the weather. 2000 miles is a long way to go to be denied the last few miles. I hope you all have the chance to summit. Best wishes and good weather.

Jeff 72, thanks for the note. We heard from our daughter 1/3 and she did summit today. she said it was real cold and her braids froze and the guys had ice in their beards. It sounds as the day before was pretty much the same.

We’ve already had some snow squalls here on Moosehead, not far from Katahdin.
And by the way…
“2000 miles is a long way to go to be denied the last few miles.”
I agree with that to a point. In fact, you should be able to go about 2,150 miles with no problem :rolleyes however . . .
If being denied those final 14 or so miles means that Baxter State Park doesn’t become Smoky Mountain National Park, then please, go out of your way to deny me. I beg you. If it means we don’t become another Mount Washington, and that we can hold onto some semblance of wilderness, then call me a river in Egypt (de-nile, heh-heh).
I suppose this is off the topic originally stated, and it truly deserves its own topic/thread. Maybe we should continue it there.
Kineo Kid
Hi Waterboy!
1/3 is a great kid, a smart and strong hiker too. 30 hikers went up the day before she did, into the snow. She went up with Trace, Wolverine, and Vic on a better weather day, but it was still pretty ‘hairy’ up there. See my 'Weekend at Katahdin post. TJ

Yes, thanks so much to 1/3 for letting me borrow her camera so that I could get a few summit photos on top of Katahdin! The Hiking Buddy’s expensive digital camera was damaged during our ascent, rendering the camera inoperable. I was NOT happy at the prospect of climbing the mountain and not being able to get a photo up on top, but 1/3 loaned me her camera when I passed her on the way up. I can’t wait to get the photos in the mail – thanks again!
Wolverine
Hey Wolverine!
1/3 just had the photos developed and your summit pics look great! They were the only ones on the roll that were not blurry.
Congrats on finishing!
Pushing Up Daisies
Hi, Pushing Up Daisies!
Thanks a lot for the update on the summit pics – I’m even more excited now to see them! I’m gonna owe 1/3 big-time for those.
Anybody know who was waiting to summit yesterday (since it sounds like it was a Class IV day)? I’m specially wondering about Blue Stool and his dad, Baltimore Jack, Triple T, Tuff, etc. The standard answer I kept getting from people was that they were all “a day or two behind”, so I figured they must be heading up any day now…
Wolverine
Several hikers including Steamboat and Singsalot were at Abol Bridge Monday morning, that’d put them in place to have tried yesterday. I can’t remember all the names. I’ve got a nice pic of 1/3, Trace, and Wolerine before they kicked Katahdin’s butt, I’ll scan it and send it out to Waterboy and Wolverine tonight.
