Custom Printable Pacific Crest Trail "Guide-Maps" Available

Six months ago I began creating a set of custom “guide-maps” for the Pacific Crest Trail which combine the most important information from the major guidebooks, without the frivolous and frustrating commentary, into an easy to reference, single-page format that includes topographic maps, mile-points, color-coded points of interest, elevation profiles and town mini-maps. Now that they are finished I’ve decided to make them available to other hikers free of charge, though I do appreciate donations. To print your own set of Guide-Maps visit the following link:

If you would like to report an error, make a suggestion or sign up to be notified of updates email me at: pct@erikasorson.com . I will be signing off around April 15, 2007 to thru-hike the PCT so I expect to be incommunicado through November.

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately I have bad news for the Guide-map project. When I first decided to do this it was because I couldn’t find a set of maps or guidebooks that I really liked for use on my hike this year. There are some really great PCT navigation resources out there, but you have to mix and match so much it becomes confusing. So I decided to make my own. Once they were done I thought I might as well share them with others. However, I did not take into consideration copyright issues with the original works. Although I have invested quite a bit of my own creativity and labor into the project it still relies heavily on data that is owned by others, and I have no right to use that. So for this reason I will be removing the maps.

However, I still believe that the Guide-map idea and layout which I have come up with is a good one and I’m not ready to give up on it yet. What I have to do now is go out and collect my own data instead of relying on that which belongs to others. I may also have to purchase certain rights or obtain permissions, etc. I’m not sure yet what all will be required, but I will figure it out. Luckily I will be hiking the PCT this summer which will give me an opportunity to gather some data first-hand.

If anyone has any ideas or would like to contribute to this project in any way or if you would like to be notified of updates please email me at pct@erikasorson.com or if you are hiking this year maybe we’ll meet on the trail. It looks like it will be at least another year before the Guide-maps are back in action, but if I have anything to do with it they will be back.

Thanks to everyone for their support and my sincerest apologies to anyone whose toes I have stepped on in the process.

Erik
