Why are there some camping spots listed in the trail guide book a that aren’t in the Data book? And conversely, why are there spots in the Data book that aren’t in the official guide? Is one source to be more trusted than the other?

Different authors. Both are good. Did the trail last year, and will be doing again this year. Camping generally not a big issue, esp if you are used to finding. I’m using the CT app and Kindle guidebook.
Saw many people with the data book last year, but I like to have maps, which the CT app provides.

While doing segment three I noticed a lot of people with the data book and subsequently this meant there were quite a few people at the noted camping spots. There were lots of places to set up camp along the way but the datebook (I think) tends to put you near water if possible. I wanted to camp in previously used spots to reduce my footprint on the trail and it was nice to camp with others - share food and chat. If you are looking for more solitude I would not use the sites in the book as that seemed to be where everyone was heading
