I have the opportunity to take my nephews out for a few days this year. Unfortunately, the only time that works out for everyones schedule is mid July. Pretty reliable water sources between Davenport an Hot Springs that time of season? Thanks.

There's a great stream source between I 40 and Snowbird Mountain that my husband and I used a few years back in August.

The streams and springs in that section are pretty reliable in my experience. You shouldn't have much problem. I never like the source in Brown Gap but the Painter Branch stream north of I-40, the stream just at the base of Max Patch, the stream following Max Patch, the source at Roaring Fork, the spring just over the summit of Bluff Mountain and then several other streams etc... between there and Hot Springs should all be flowing nicely. It's been a bit dry in the NC mountains but I was just up there and most everything seemed to be flowing nicely. Hope this helps.

My experience as a section hiker, is you never know for sure how reliable the water sources will be. If it rains just before your trip, some sources which were dry are now flowing. Talking to NOBO hikers in Hot Springs or SOBOs at Davenport Gap can give you a fairly reliable indication where dry spots may be. If you have a car available, cache water at various intersections of the Trail.

I agree that the water at the gap is less than perfect. There is actually a great source nearby with a pipe if you make a hard left as soon as you get to the gap and walk about 1/4 mile. The pipe is on the left. I put it there several years ago and amazingly it is still there. So when you get to the last set of stairs at the gap there are 2 roads converging on the left. Take the first (western-most) road about 1/4 mile.

When I hiked this section of the trail it poured everyday, the trail itself became a stream haha. Hopefully the weather for your trip will be nicer, but it does rain a lot around the Smokeys so you should be fine.
