Dead Animals in the water

To keep most small animals from drowning in a water tank when all they want to do is get a drink, just look around for an old flat board or a stick and place it in the water with one end on top of the edge of the water tank and the other end floating in the water. If you can find a little baling wire attach it a little more permanently. This will allow mice, squirrels, and even birds to crawl out and will keep the water cleaner for the next hiker to come along. Many ranchers do this already but it is amazing how many water tanks I have seen that are death traps for critters.

A hut at the southern end of the AAWT in australia had buckets of water which each held several rats that I had to throw out… the buckets of food dropped for hikers were not secured so I had to reorganize it all which took me hours… some of the food was years old; I did this cleanup for a bunch of the old miner cabin huts on the aawt. if you go to aussie land, do not miss the aawt & most of the national parks & great walks of queensland & bibbulman track & walk around the uluru red rock at alice springs. go down under on it (New zealand is nice too)/

Yes, gingerbreadman, I definitely want to make my way down there before I kick the bucket. A fascinating place, but I’ve only seen pictures…

If you want to get an idea of what hiking in Australia is about, check out the descrptions on my website Photodiary of a Nomad (www.gang-gang.net/nomad )- it includes lots of photos. There is a fair bit about New Zealand and other places as well.

Here’s the new slogan for saving tank-bound critters - “Operation Climb A-board”. Learn it, love it, live it.

Now if we could just find a way to train cows not to poop in their own drinking water…
