Dehydrated peanut butter

I don’t know about posting links in Trailforums but if you google “Bell Plantation” it should pull up a site with “PB2” dehydrated peanut butter. So much lighter than a jar of peanut butter in your pack! Not as much fat, but it actually tastes very much like the real thing!

tastes fine, however with only 54 calories, compared to 170 per serving, it doesn’t help a lot putting calories back that you burn hiking

Hmmm…Sounds like they took the fat out and left the protein in…There could be a use for that, both on and off the trail…

You can carry a jar of peanut butter. And if not, eat peanuts. :bawling

regular Skippy type of PB will not dehydrate. It is full of oils, oils don’t ‘dry’. also, its ALL hydrogenated fat not even partially hydrogenated. That means PB is loaded with trans fats. This will give you significant heart disease later on.

The best bet is where you grind the peanuts in the machine at the store. That way you don’t get any trans fats with it. Also, I think it’s Skippy brand that makes an “all natural” PB with no trans fats, only problem is it’s made with palm oil. That is fully saturated fats. Not any better than trans fats at all.

Peanut butter and other nut butters are very healthy. There is less than .5 grams of trans-fat in peanut, used to prevent separation of the oil. Fat found in most nut butters is heart healthy monounsaturated fats. Fats are needed when out on long distance hiking trips, and provide 9 calories per gram, rather than the 4 calories found in 1 gram of protein or carb. You can avoid that tiny amount of trans fats by buying nut butters that list only nuts and perhaps salt in the ingredient list. Try to avoid nut butters that have added sugars, like high fructose corn syrup. You’ll get enough (way too much) of this in all the snack type foods you’ll be eating.

You can also try Justin’s Nut Butter. He sells it in 1 oz. foil packets. I carried two a day for my whole PCT trip and never tired. I just squeezed straight from the tube to my mouth or a tortilla or some wheat things.
