What foods need to be dehydrated and why? How do you dehydrate them?
Jeff
You should try to dehydrate everything you bring. There are some exceptions…like cheese and PB etc. Why? Cuz it will lighten your pack, and the food will keep longer.

I dehydrated a bunch of instant potatoes. That was easy and didnt take too long. Another favorite is Kool Aid. I dried mine by beating it on a rock and letting the air do the rest

Many foods contain 80% or more of water content. So 20 pounds of regular foods becomes 4 pounds of food, which you have to carry. When you use water to rehydrate, you wind up with 20 pounds of food again. Some foods are already dehydrated when you buy them, Ramen (noodles and all kinds of noodles/pasta), beans, rice, nuts, beef jerky, etc, etc. Additional foods which can be dehydrated are for example apples, pears, meats, potatoes, tomatoes and so forth. You can buy a food dehydrator, you can dehydrate in an over set on low heat, you can air dry, and you can also dehydrated over low heat at camp along the trail. Visit an oriental market, they have an abundance of dehydrated (dried) foods. May be better, not to dehydrate, just eat fresh and buy fresh food along the trail more often. It takes time to dehydrate and rehydrate, also dehydrated food is bought often at premium prices. Keep on hiking (and eating).:cheers
