Denatured alcohol quantities

im planning on hiking the pct this year and was concerned about the lack of denatured alcohol in specific areas. based on yogis handbook, she lists places where there are long stretches where refueling on alcohol or HEET, etc. may be a problem. so my question lies in how much alcohol was carried at one time. i usually tend to carry just enough to last me the intended amount of time i am out (5-7 days at a time) and it seems there may be places where i might need to carry 2 weeks worth. that said, i have only begun to plan out my hike so a bit of this could be irrelevant.

much thanks to you all

The thing with the PCT is that the towns are small. Sometimes your resupply option is a small convenience store, and they just don’t carry many items. I can only think of two places which carry denatured-by-the-ounce.

Yep, carrying 2 weeks worth of alcohol on the PCT is normal. 3 weeks would not surprise me. Also, remember that you will use more alcohol than normal in the Sierra.

What i use AS well as heat are the flue tabs which you can have in your bump box. If i put a fuel tab + heet i can get eneough for coffee and a second boil for my hot oatmeal…i would guess you are using a beer can stove???

A 20 oz soda bottle fuel of HEET or denatured is good enough for more than 2 weeks if you are doing basic cooking once per day. The only stretch that is a bit awkward is coming out of Agua Dulce. Mojave didn’t have HEET or denatured or grain. However, Kennedy Meadows had a big supply. This ended up being something like an 8 day stretch. Coming out of Kennedy Meadows, you need HEET to get you to VVR (about 10 days). You might want to carry extra fuel because it gets pretty cold in the Sierra and a hot drink in the AM could be nice.
