Does anyone know of a route around the Great Smokey Mt. N. P. I will be hiking the A.T. in 08 with my dog, I have hiked the park before and want to walk around it as I can,t take the dog into the park . I know I’ll probably have to road walk but maybe someone in the area would know the best way around the park Thanks Cowboy

another dog torturer/
You people make me sick/
what makes you think that your dog can handle the trail?
I have known many Trail dogs and they tell me that people who bring their puppies into the wild are self centered morons.
True trail dogs are trained and conditioned!
Quit treating your dog like a dog!

Your best bet is to catch a ride to Davenport Gap from Fontana Dam. It’s probably a 100 mile detour and there are no trails around the park. You would NOT want to walk it. From the comments on this tread you may be getting an idea of what AT hikers think about dogs on the trail. Trust me, your dog will prevent you from making friends with a lot of good people.

thanks Tom, Last time I boarded my shepard at a kennel, don’t remember the name but it was listed in WF guidebook I’ve been lucky I guess as I’ve never had any problems on the trail with my dog. She actually made more friends as I tend to avoid people.Don’t go into towns except to resuply and try not to stay if possible,I also don’t stay in shelters wouldn’t even if I didn’t have a dog.
