Hi,

I’m looking for a ~40 mile hike in the AT vacinity, and my gf has requesting hiking around Devil’s Courthouse in NC on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I’ve never been here, so am looking for help/suggestions i planning a hike here. It will be a Sat, Sun, and Mon hike. A couple of miles will be possible on Friday night, and we will have to drive (about six hours) back on Monday evening. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Howie—

The 2 best guidebooks I know are “Walking the Blue Ridge” by L. Adkins and “Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway” by Randy Johnson; both should be available at Amazon.

There’s also a pretty informative website at www.brptrails.com that provides all sorts of info on scenic points, distances, etc.

Have a great trip.

try the art loeb trail…it starts (or ends) in waynesville, nc at the boy scout camp, and goes up cold mountain (the same one from the movie) and up and over some other mountains and ridges, and ends (begins) right on the parkway, about a five minute drive from devils courthouse…it may even go as far as the courthouse…this is very high land, the highest part of the parkway, well above 5000 feet…

That stretch Big Dee is describing is a favorite of mine. I thought the Cold Mt. is a side trip from the western scout camp -don’t have the map here. It goes into Shining Rock Wilderness.

I think wookie is correct, as I haven’t hiked the whole art loeb, just black balsam section. i found this nice description that explains the connection to cold mountain and devils courthouse…

Try the Art Loeb Tr. 31 miles long. Elevation gain of about 5000 ft. Side trail to get to Devils Courthouse. Cold Mtn trail is side trail off of AL. Pretty tough walking but worth it.
