Dew on Hammonk - Appalachian Trail

I live in Ohio and set my hammonk up for a test sleep last night. Just bought a Jacks R Better.

I set it up in my back yard in the afternoon, but when I took my sleeping bag out about 10pm, the hammonk was soaked, like some one had sprayed water on it.

Simple old dew I guess, what the best way to stop this. A tarp over it or what ??

I don’t use a hammock, but I have the same problem with my tarptent. Dew is a fact of life, but there are ways to minimize it. Site selection may be the best way. I try to stay out of the lowlands where dew forms. On the AT this year, I would make camp on a ridge and enjoy the view of the fog in the valleys below in the morning, then get soaked walking through the wet grass, but my pack would be dry.

I camped in a low meadow once with a partner who had the exact tent. I was under a large tree, he was in the open. I was completely dry, he was soaked with dew. Go figure.

I’ve spent many nights in a hammock. I’ve never had dew on or around it. I do use a tarp however, its needed when it gets colder. I make mine like a tent over the hammock.

The only time my hammock ever got wet was when it started raining and the water ran down the straps. A way to stop that is simply put a knot in the strap or rope, that way the water drips.

Good luck.

Thanks, yes camping in the woods will help with the dew for sure.
