What is the nearest shelter to the parking area at Dicks Creek Gap? (North or South) How many trail miles away is it? Are there any other great camping areas near the Dicks Creek Gap area? Thanks!

There is a shelter (Deep Gap) about 3.7 miles SOUTH of Dicks Creek Gap and a shelter (Plumorchard Gap) about 4.8 miles NORTH of Dicks Creek Gap.

There is a good campsite 1.2 miles NORTH of Dicks Creek Gap but the water source is unreliable.

There is also a good campsite 1.1 miles SOUTH of Dicks Creek Gap at Moreland Gap but again, the water source is hit-or-miss this time of year.

We liked the Deep Gap shelter - off the trail down a side trail, very private, huge shelter with loft and deck, nice tent sites, decent water source, and big fire pit. You could have it to yourself most of the time as most people by pass it to go to Dicks Creek Gap and just use it as a stop to eat/have a break.

I agree with Mrs Baggins. Deep Gap is a nice location, it is far enough away from the road that locals do not hike 3.7 miles to party. Locals in that area are very respectful of hikers anyway. It has a nice shelter etc.

Plumorchard is also a great location, off the trail, near a stream. Three story loft, bear cables, etc. It is a little further away from Dicks Creek Gap.

You will not go wrong at either one of those. It should be peaceful this time of year.

Stayed at Deep Gap shelter in early August. The water source was ok until some dummy took out the pipe thinking it was trash that someone had left. Mucked the whole thing up! I’m sure that has been fixed by now. It was very dry in August and there were some dry water sourses but Deep Gap was flowing decent. I’ve stayed at every shelter south of there and this one is one of my favorites. There were a few mouse nests with babies, but they never bothered us or our gear. We slept up in the loft were the only thing have to worry about is the Black Widow Spiders that love to nest up there. Just make sure you squash them first and you should be fine, or sleep on the lower level.
