Out of all my hiking the last few summers, I hardly ever see anyone with one of those little spades to dig a hole for doing #2. Whats up with that??..lol

you usually wont see many people openly flaunting their showy little spades around because they are just not cool to hang off of your pack. plussss its a private tool for private business. but i asure you that 9 out of 10 hikers carry the little shovel, or some sort of digging utinsel.
have a wonderful day.

I bought one of those lustrous orange shovels thinking it was a necessary item for backpacking. Then I read of someone using their poles and/or sticks. I cut the weight of Mr. Orange and use my trekking poles to dig. Not as efficient, but dual-purpose and less weight/less space.
Then again I did meet one thru-er that carried an ice axe for the quadruple purpose of hiking stick (the long shaft version), self-arrest in snow, weapon ‘as-needed’ and an excellent pooper scooper. You could dig a 6" hole with that thing in one good shot. It came highly recommended.
