Mornin’Hiker Family. I’ve lost my directions from Amicalola to the parking lot on FS 42. Can anyone out there help me?
Best wishes to all those starting out this year. I’ll be following along with you here on tj~Journey '03.

You can pick up printed directions at the Amicalola Falls ranger station. When I last made the trip about a year ago, they were still providing them. There are/were two ways up to the parking lot at FS-42. I’ve been on both. The shorter way is to the East. It’s on poorer roads and is more confusing. As a guy, I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I missed a number of the turns and had to do a fair amount of backtracking. The other route to the West is recommended by the ranger station. It’s a bit longer but it’s on better roads and is much less confusing. IMHO, the longer recommended route to the West is a better choice for first timers. With better roads and with less wrong turns, it’ll get you to Springer faster.

From Amicalola Falls SP, take a ® on Hwy 52 and veer to the right or west at the intersection with HWY 136. Continue on HWY 52 into Gilmer County. Turn ® on Roy Road @ Stanley’s Store. It ends at the Big Creek Road in about eight miles. Turn ® on Big Creek Road and then onto Doublehead Gap Road. Turn right at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and follow FR 42 about 6.5 miles to the AT Trail Crossing.

FWIW - I drove both approach routes in early February and found the east approach in very good shape. At least it was at that time. If you are starting from Amicalola Falls, they most certainly will be glad to give you printed directions at the visitors center. Have fun.
