Do SOBOs get "Katahdin Fever"?

There’s a thread right now about Springer Fever. As predictably as the spring equinox, former NOBOs get an irresistible longing to hit the trail at this time of year.

What about SOBOs? Do they get “Katahdin Fever” as midsummer approaches?

You’d better believe that prospective SOBO’s get the spirit. And not just during the summer - it is possible to start a SOBO thruhike as late as Labor Day. The secret is to get through the Whites no later than early October to avoid winter conditions. And, you have to be receptive to going through the SNP area in January or February. But it has definitely been done.

Katahdin Fever is more insidious and long-lasting than Springer Fever. It starts in January when the sufferer realizes “I could hike again this year. It’s not too late! I could still make it!” Then the poor victim has to pass day after day, week after week, month after month not setting off on his/her hike.

Ah! The fever for the trail is never ending. Weather it’s north or south the call does not end with Springer or Katahdin. I have started both ways so I feel the call to hike year round.
