Do you tip those who pick you up hitchhiking?

Do you offer them a tip or money? If so how much. If you don't, admit it also please. Just trying to get a gage on it.

Jason. I have had dozens of hitches over the years. There have been occassions, when hitching a ride, I will offer to pay for gas, a cup of coffee or offer to give them money. If I feel that the driver could use some money and refuses it, I will simply leave the cash on the seat, when I get out of the car. I leave money or pay for gas that I think is reasonable, no set amount. I figure the driver is saving me alot of time and shuttle fees. To pay forward, I have and will take people from the North Springs MARTA station to Amicalola Falls SP for free. One hiker left me a large amount of cash on the seat when she left, that's when I learned to leave money behind. I will be on Spring break April 6-10, if anyone is in a bind for transportation.

Most drivers don't want anything from a hitchhiker. However, IMHO, it is proper to offer to pay for gas or offer to buy the driver a cold drink. Most always the driver will refuse to accept anything. To get something from the hitchhiker is not the drivers intentions. The driver only wants to be part of the hitchhikers experience.

"The driver only wants to be part of the hitchhikers experience." Maybe, just maybe, the driver wants the hitcher to be a part of his experience! Life is full of opportunities to "pay it forward". Picking up a hiker is a small deed in a world full of needs and maybe the opportunity and timing are just right. Picking up (or hosting or feeding) a hiker probably isn't a huge deal for those who do it and I doubt wanting to be a part of the hiker's experience is the primary motivator. Maybe making life a little easier or better for someone else plays a key role. Food for thought!

Never paid anything, never received anything. Most rides are too short for it to be an issue.
