Don't count on Kincora to forward

My brother just went through Kincora and had an awful experience with a mail drop!

The package did not get there in time for him (he was two days ahead). I offered to send him another box at the next stop in Troutdale VA and Bear Paw at the Kincora Hiker Hostel he was staying at assured him she would send it on to Troutdale as soon as it got to Kincora. This was on a Friday. Turns out the gal at the hostel received it three days later on Monday, kept it for four days before sending it along on a Thursday (right before a weekend)! When I contacted her to ask about the package she claimed she received it on either Wednesday or Thursday but my post office Delivery Confirmation Receipt shows Monday on the USPS website. My brother stayed two days in Troutdale waiting for it to show up but had to keep going. It has been 12 days and the Troutdale Church and Post Office still have not received it.

So note to the wise, get those mail drops scheduled correctly. Don’t rely on the hostels to send these along. Better to coordinate with people that you know! And dude, I will totally send you extra tortillas and and pepperoni in your next box!

Sounds like lesson was learned. Relying on hostels to send outgoing mail is really not in their job description and just because a visiting hiker promised something, doesn't mean it falls on the hostel.

This place is magical and Bob might be the nicest person on the planet, allowing hikers to crash at his place and get a ride to town for 4 dollars.

But yes, I would agree, send drops to PO’s with set times or better yet, shop at groceries so when you get 2 days ahead of schedule, there are no issues.

Bob Peoples is one of the great people on the Appalachian Trail. Kincore is a must stay on any hike. Right now Bob is on a hiking trip. The hostel is in the hands of one person, who is overloaded with keeping up with hostel business. That person can't be expect to drop everything to make a long drive into Hampton TN to forward a drop on a moments notice.

To Leif and Zip Drive: Can’t you program this site to automatically delete anything from this “David Duke” person, who ever and what ever he is. Not only is the name offensive, but he never has anything useful to say.

Bob is a Great man… He is on his on now that his wonderful and amazing wife passed last year. Pat was an incredible woman and friend of the trail.

Bob still maintains the trail in that area and it’s not small. He works hard to see his hostel runs as good and best it can. It is a bum deal when happenings with packages go like this. MANY a hiker has had an issue with packages.

Bob & Pat were honest, tireless and warm people to me on my "05 hike.

Kincora Rocks!

By this you mean a missed mail-drop? On the AT this does not amount to awful, humorous maybe, inconvenient, oh well, but awful involves blood, police, cadaver dogs...the Peoples Place of Kincora is a grace.
