Is smoking marijuana in the shelters and on the trail acceptable?Yes I know its illegal. I just want to know the general opinion among the AT hiking community.

Smoking in general is not accepted in shelters because not all who use shelters are smokers. As for marijuana, it exists but is not flaunted on the trail, just like everywhere else.

Like Cig smokers, the typical pot smoking hiker will walk away from the shelters out of respect for others… :pimp … we would only smoke in shelters if we already knew that everyone there was chill with it.

Few green blazers will make it to Maine. Dope deminishes motivation, dulls perception, and increases fatigue. Add to that what it does to your lungs, your wallet, and your chances of arrest. You’re also endangering the freedon of others by carrying your stash in other’s cars, homes, hostels, and shared lean-tos.
If you can’t sacrafice getting stoned for five months you have an addiction problem you’re in denial about.

tarpeze although you may not like the green blazers, that doesnt give you freedom to fabricate statistics. many pot heads make it all the way, just the pot usually doesnt!
i could make it five months, but why would i want to! there are a good number of motivated green blazers out there, and many a relaxing circle to be found. we keep it chill and out of everybodys faces, mostly because you cant be having everyone tapping your stash!
i say entirely acceptible. keep it out of sight out of mind from the general populus. just like the rest of the world.

Please; folks…this thread has been covered over & over in the past. Along with cell phones on the AT, officer Taco, yellow blazing, taking your dog with you hiking, etc…The end result is a whole lot of name calling, in a kind of “pissing contest”, & ill feelings.
