Doyle Hotel - what's the daily rate these days?

Is it still reasonable? It was 15 years ago but you also got what you paid for.

Other than the wonderful bar and their food, I’d say they should pay you to stay there. Grab a beer and burger and sleep back in the fresh air of the forest. Better yet, fall asleep in the bar with an empty beer glass.

When I stayed at the Doyle during my thru-hike, it was murderously hot in the room so I opened a window, slipped back to bed, then was awoken a few minutes later by the sound of the window slamming shut then falling off the sash to plummet 3 stories down to the pavement below. The impact was quite spectacular, with glass flying everywhere in what certainly had the auspices of a severe domestic dispute. Not surprisingly then, the cops arrived about 10 minutes later, at which point I reluctantly dressed and went on down to explain the situation. In essence, they got what I paid for. Never did discuss the matter with management; I was back on the trail first thing in the morning, with no intention of going back.

I don’t know about that, Floater. But a little value goes a long way, don’t you think? Maybe the Doyle has changed in recent years. I haven’t been there since 1998.

Stayed there a couple of years ago, can’t remember the price but it was cheap and they take dogs. I gave her a $100 bill for two nights and she just put it in the register while he engaged me in conversation…anyway not sure if it was intentional but I had to ask for my change. They laughed and high fived each other… I would stay there again because it’s cheap, I am poor and I hike with my dogs.

I went into the Doyle last year during my thru-hike, and you couldn’t pay me enough to stay there. Everyone that I talked to who did stay there from last year wished they hadn’t. It should be torn down if the owners don’t care enough about it to fix it up and properly clean it – the forest is safer than that building any day of the week. Biggest complaints I heard : roachs, filthy dirty rooms, nasty bathrooms – and this is compared to the other cheapo hostels and lodgings that have been raved about. It’s a dump - get a picture - get drink - and get the hellish-hiker-experience out of there.:cheers :cheers

We stay at the Doyle even when we are traveling by car going north or south. The Kelly’s are great people. The rooms may not be the greatest, but you get what you pay for. Great food, great atmosphere, and great company.

Listen…The Doyle is a piece of history that shouldn’t be missed. It’s great architecture and a unique experience. For a thru-hiker it’s quite comfortable and reasonably priced. Would you rather stay at a Super 8 for twice as much staffed by some jerk who thinks you’re gonna sneak in another 6 hikers? The town ain’t bad either, all you need is in walking distance. When I stayed at the Doyle in ‘03 I walked down to a pizza joint on their main street. Figured out I left my wallet their an hour later, walked back to retrieve it. Some kids had turned it over to the owner when they found it. I got my money back minus the cash I had in it. When I told the owner, being a small town that it is, he called one of the kids’ houses…I could make out some choice words, and 15 minutes later a kid walked in with my money and an apology. So…it’s not only a pretty good place to stay…it’s also a pretty good town it’s in.

You get what you pay for and you don’t pay too much to stay there…do it, experience it and support a part of our shared history.

I think the Doyle is an interesting place to stay. Sure, it is not your typical corporate chain hotel but it was a nice little stay in a small town. The local trail angel shuttled us around, I enjoyed some beers in the bar, got a nice shower and a bed to sleep in. Come on, $25/night is a pretty darn cheap rate. If your fussy, stay somewhere else though I’m not sure how someone that fussy would survive hiking all the way up to Pa. and find themselves turning up their noses at the the Doyle. :cheers

The Doyle is a thru hikers dream. Great food. Cheap rooms. Bar. Worth the price and no chance I would skip it on my next thru. Super dog friendly!

No matter the cost there is no excuse for a place to be infested with cockroaches or dirty. Basic cleanliness to pass the health inspector is most states is a requirement.

Roach baits in cabinet corners get rid of em without any dangerous sprayed pesticides being necessary. I tried boric acid but they just eat that for lunch… diatomeacious earth may work, but it’s expensive !!!

Gotta luv Pat and Vickie, they helped me out when I got sick on the trail and been going back whenever I can ever since, food is great, cheap and hiker sized portions, the beer is cold, and you can barely stay in a campground for what they charge, they don’t have the $$ to renovate but are fixing some rooms up as they can.

My wife & I are NB section hikers (two weeks each year) and stayed at the Doyle last July. While medicating ourselves at the bar with a couple of pints of Dr. Troegs and considering what to have for dinner, I informed Pat that Jeckel & I were celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary and we’d like their finest room. He nodded, left the room, and shortly came back with news that we would have the honeymoon suite. Hot showers, clean sheets, good food, good ale, good people – the Kelly’s are great people and doing a great job of keeping the Doyle alive.
