Dragons tooth 061007 40th b-day

Hey…today is my 40th birthday and I celebrated this special event by climbing Dragon’s Tooth this past Sunday. We car camped at the Audie Murphy Monument parking area Saturday night, cleaning up a bunch of glass and gathering enough downed wood for a weeks worth of campfires. My daughter, who is not yet 10, saw her first copperhead, a baby resting on a rather large piece of firewood she was about to pick up. Luckily her guardian angel was watching. The snake had just eaten and was very lazy. We watched the sunset from the cliffs near the monument and the kids stumbled upon a geo-caching box. Goo thing I have them signed up for a geo-caching 4-H class later this summer.

The next day, we drove around to the Dragon’s Tooth lot off of VA rt311 and began our ascent. I haven’t hiked this trail in 3 years, not since I herniated 3 disks in my lumbar and discovered I have 6 lumbar vertebrea. Needless to say, I’m out of shape and the climb up took nearly 3 hours, with many rest stops and water breaks. We met a Roanoke Trail Club monitor and the kids received a “leave no trace” card. They also found another geo-caching box on the crest of the mountain. Lucky Devils!

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate an important birthday and recovered health than climbing a mountain. We hope to do another “big” hike later this year, hopefully somewhere in NC.

I’ll process the few photos I took later today.

Ms. Kitty, Happy 40th birthday and Recovering from poor health day. Wow, your day hike sounded great. I will be on that section starting next week. I’m leaving Atlanta Friday night(jun 22nd) and will arrive in Roanoke Saturday morning. I’m looking for a shuttle to Newport, VA, Highway 42/by Sinking Creek Valley. Do you know of anyone that does shuttles in that area? Email me if you do. I look forward to seeing Keffer Oak, Audie Murphy Monument, Dragons Tooth, McAfee Knob, Tinker Cliffs, the Guillotine, James River and into the Waynesboro.

A couple of years ago we did that section of the trail and had a shuttle with Brenda of Rendevouz Motel in Pearisburg. Don’t know if she still does shuttles or not but you might want to check. Was very nice and entertaining lady and very reasonable. Good luck!

I sectioned through that area about 2-3 years ago and Bill Gautier did all of my shuttles for me. He’s also (or at least was) the caretaker at the hostel at the Catholic Church in Pearisburg. I presume he’s still shuttling.
He did a great job by me and so I never worked with anyone else until I got up close to the Daleville interchange area. Although I stayed at the Rendezvous Motel, Brenda always seemed too busy to do any shuttling - and Bill Gautier was taking care of me just fine anyway.
His number is 540-921-4673. His card says that he’d cover from “Damascus to Peaks of Otter”.
If he’s not available, or whatever, I’m sure Del Schechterly from Daleville would go down that far south for you and I know he’s still shuttling this year. His number is 540-992-1527. You’d probably definitely want to switch to using Del for any sections north of Catawba up to Buena Vista/Rt 60 (as I did).
Whichever of these two you connect with tell them Capt Bly says “HI”.
Happy Trails,
Capt. Bly
