Driving directions to Katahdin

What driving directions do I give to the people picking me up at Katahdin?

Getting to Millinocket is pretty straight forward. You go up Interstate 95 for what seems like forever and take the Millinocket exit. Go to mapquest to get the exit and route number. From the center of Millinocket follow the signs to Baxter State Park. Its been a couple of years since I’ve been there but I seem to remember that there was some confusing turns getting out of town but it was not that difficult.

Actually, it’s the Medway exit off I-95.

If you get the ALDHA companion or Wingfoot’s Handbook, the directions should be in there. But, like Big B posted, Millinocket isn’t that big, so there are only a couple of roads going in and out of town.

Thank you Peaks, I stand corrected.

The person picking you up should tell the rangers at the entrance gate that they’re picking up a thru-hiker. They’ll be directed to the Katahdin Stream Campground which is at the base of the Hunt Trail, the final 5 miles to the peak. There’s a picnic area there (as well as shelters and campsites), a stream for water (purify it yourself) and an outhouse/privy. Good luck! I hear that the Abol Bridge Campground, just before you hike into the park, now has a pay phone of sorts from which you can call your pickup folks and tell them the time/day you plan to summit. Good luck!
