Durango accomodations

Like many of you I plan to finish my CT thru-hike in Durango. I would like to stay overnight there before heading for home the following day. However, after surfing the web I have had no luck finding inexpensive lodging.
Can anyone (perhaps a former CT hiker) recommend any places to stay?
There is a campground (United Campground) that may be an option; can anyone comment on it? I’m even thinking about hitching up to Silverton and staying at the hostel there.
Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions you may have.

P.S. I anticipate getting to Durango roughly the 20th of July

There used to be a hostel off of 2nd ave when I lived there. Apparently it’s closed now:( The cheapest hotels I can think of are the Adobe Inn, Vagabond in, and Sleep in. They all run (or at least used to) around $40 to $60 a night.

The KOA campground at the north end of town is pretty nice. http://www.koa.com/Where/CO/06111.htm
The KOA south of town is ok, but not as pleasant a setting.

There is also ample camping at the Junction Creek trail head (the end of the CT). It’s a USFS developed camp ground, I think the charge is $7 a night.

Just curious, when are you starting out? 20th of july seems like a pretty early time to be finishing.

Manzinita,
On Labor Day weekend they have the Iron Horse Motorcycle Rally in Durango. The motels fill up well in advance. Weekend motels in Creede on summer weekends can be tricky. FWIW. Have a great trip, I loved hiking the CT last summer.

Thanks for the feedback on Durango motels and campgrounds.

I plan to depart Denver in mid-June, assuming that a lot of snow doesn’t move in between now and then.
