I’m hoping to leave my car in Durango for the extent of a CT thru-hike (4-6 weeks). Any suggestions?

Long-term parking at the airport? Reliable but pricey ($6/day). Perhaps a good last option.

Call the Chamber of Commerce, sometimes they can help. worked for me in Pagosa and Califormia doing the John Muir Trail; or perhps the airport would cut you a deal.

I’ve done parking by finding the local police station and parking as close to it as possible – then going inside and letting the dispatcher know my vehicle is NOT abandoned (never hurts to have a note ready to leave with him/her to ‘stick up’ somewhere so the other shifts know what’s going on with the ‘strange vehicle’). Street Views (on Google Earth) seem to show street parking near the station with no meters… (I don’t know Durango…)

Tbrucia has had good fortune. In Durango, they’d still consider your car “abandoned” and would haul it off to the impound lot. Parking can be tight in that town.
What about calling a storage warehouse? They house campers, boats, etc. and maybe would give you a better price for 6 weeks than the airport. Times are tough down here in the San Juans and folks are pretty flexible in their efforts to make a buck.

You can park it on the street near my house and leave the keys with my wife. She will move it if it gets tagged. We’ve done this for several hikers over the years without any problems. Contact me via www.bearcreeksurvey.com and we will work it out.
