Durango-Silverton RR

I am planning on hiking sections 22 thru to 24, and thought taking the Drango-Silverton RR out would be a nice way to end the trip. A call to the train reservation line informed me that the cost would be $60 per person. That seems a bit steep.

Has anyone eles taken a one-way train ride from Silverton to Elk Park? If so, what was the cost per person and was it worth it?

You could also hitch to Molas Pass and walk 4 or so miles down to Elk Park. The hitch would be about 10 miles or so.

We took the train from Durango to the Elk Park whistle stop and backpacked back to Durango. It was a great way to begin our trip. We parked in Durango and took the train up and got off at Elk Park. Only one or two trains per day make the stop. Yes it is $60 per person because they don’t discount the ticket because you are only going one way. Don’t rely on the train personnel to tell you where to pick up the trail. We did and went about 800’ up and 800’ down and two hours later we were back on the train tracks walking the other way. bummer.

Beautiful Beautiful hike.

If the $60 fare is too steep, consider hitching back to Durango. I’ve always had an easy time getting a ride to/from Molas Pass, and frankly, hitches always seems to provide great memories of their own. Another interesting way to finish off a great trip!
