Hey girls I noticed that many of you wear ear rings on the trail. How do you keep things clean and your ears not infected?

I had chronic trouble with infected ear rings until I switched to high quality gold posts and stopped changing them altogether. I’ve worn the same ear rings in my ears every day for the last 14 years, at least. (boring, I know!) As for cleaning them, I pretty much don’t, other than some shampoo suds when I’m washing my hair. I might pull them out once or twice per year for a soak in peroxide. Maybe. They just seem to stay clean.

It wasn’t a deliberate change. Each pair was a gift from my husband. I liked them so much I just left them in all the time, and voila! Problem solved.

I had the same experience as Chipper. Wore the same pair without taking them out (just for the hike not 14 yrs), no problems. And mine weren’t gold or anything fancy.

Quality body jewelry is the way to go. Many people have reactions to low grade metal in their body, and just because you paid a lot for it doesn’t mean it isn’t constructed up substandard material!. Visit a reputable body piercing shop for 316L or 316LVM grade metal. Everything in a quality shop will be made of safe metal like this. Your choices in design might be limited, but it beats irritated piercings.

Before I was a hiker trash bum I was a body piercer for many years. Alas, even titanium jewelry is too heavy anymore…
