In his classic book, Walking With Spring, Earl refers to his main camera on the hike as a Retina. He also carried an Argus C3 as an extra, though that one was stolen while he was in Pennsylvania.
There is a website, earlshaffer.com, but there aren’t photos of his early hikes there, at least not yet. Some may be added later on. He shot color slides on his 1948 hike, unusual for that time. The photos in Walking With Spring are printed as B&W. In a more recent book, The Appalachian Trail: Calling Me Back to the Hills, Earl chronicles his 1998 50th anniversary hike. The book is illustrated with AT photos taken by photographer Bart Smith, though a handful of Earl’s 1948 photos appear in it also.
