Early start - The Colorado Trail

I had been planning to start from Denver for a thru hike next week sometime. Too early? It seems like most of the sections are below tree line & should be okay, but I am concerned about the higher sections. Should I stay (wait a couple weeks to start) or should I go?

Thanks

Wait.

Next week would probably be a great time to hike the 72 miles from Denver to Kenosha Pass because it would be nice and cool. After that, you would be looking at major snow and a lot of misery. The Alpine zone(tundra)in Colorado begins at around 11,500’. 18 of the 28 Segments of the CT enter this zone. Only five the segments from Kenosha to Durango (414 miles) do not go above 11,500’ at some point.

Breckenridge looks like it could still be open for skiing. The big mountains still hold a dense snow pack. Georgia Pass is covered. The first five miles out of Kenosha Pass were “okay”, but farther than that presents a real test. I completely agree with bearcreek…this would be a splendid time to hike the first 5 sections. The water is rising from some significant melt in the Blue River, and there’s lots of the white stuff lingering still. It was nearly 90 degrees today, and should be above 90 tomorrow. Summer is here, but I’d let another week or two pass before heading out. Well, water won’t be a problem. TGuy

appreciate the replies bearcreek & trailguy. my schedule is pretty free over the summer so on the advice of the masters, I am thinking about waiting until the july 4th weekend (my bday!) and switching up the starting point to durango & hiking back towards home.

I am still on schedule for a June 24 or 25 departure. It’s almost here and preparations are just about finalized. I really appreciate all the info that has been provided on this page. It is really helpful. THANKS

Hey Chris L,

My comments about July 4th were directed at a South bound hike. While you can easily hike the first 5 sections right now, I’m not so sure about the Northbound first five (24-28) sections on July 4th. I am toying with the idea of doing a Northbound, starting in late July/early August, and walking home. Cool idea.
