Emailing from the trail

Hi as I read through all these journals, and I plan for my own hike, I wonder what is the best way to send emails from the trail? Do people recommend Pocketmail, or just relying on internet service at postoffices, and libraries in town? I have many school groups following my hike so communication home will be important to me…

We wondered also. My son (Rocket) has been emailing us consistantly using a pocketmail device. He likes it because he can keep his “electronic” journal up to date as he goes. He has often run into times when there is not email access when he arrives in town (late in day, Sunday, etc) So far, the pocketmail has proven great for keeping us (the parents) and all of the followers up to date and feeling his emotions. It is like a book being written in front of you.
Great luck on your venture.

We also had kids following us on ours (trailjournals.com/rudolf) We used one the whole way and it was great. We kept in contact with two schools, a newspaper. We also fielded Q+A from people reading the journal and it was fun to reply to the guest book entries. They have an anual fee of $100 and buying the device. Using a phone card and pay phones it was functional. Some payphones exclude the use of electronic. Sprint is a problem sometimes.
