Quick hello from Erwin after 30 days out; all’s well, having GREAT time at Miss Janet’s House, the new hostel, which is turning into THE place to stay here in town; owner of the other place, who shall remain nameless, has essentially been reduced to making rude gestures to Janet’s children as he rumbles around town slacking his 2 or 3 guests, wondering where in hell his customers have all absconded to… in any case, it’s pouring down rain here, looks like a day off, and this is a great place to spend it, anyone in the area this spring or summer should absolutely drop by 220 North Elm Ave (423-743-1932 or see http://www.geocities.com/missjanetshouse) and say hey to Miss J…gota run, see some of you at Trail Days, best to Zip D., thanx again for providing this cool site.

Why is he even getting 2 or 3 guests, haven’t those folks been warned. I hope they don’t do anything to piss him off … he just might throw their packs in the river.

Three questions:
(1) Does Miss Janet ferry folks to and from the trail?
(2) Why does everyone seem to hate Johnny’s. I’ve been there twice and enjoyed it both times. I’d like to know why folks dislike him so much. Most of the complaints I hear are that he makes people pay for everything. Yes, he does go too far with some of that, but I can handle it - no real big deal. So, does it come down to the fact that he is trying to run a business and make money – while some other places we stay at are not? Or, is there more to it than that?
(3) How do I explain to my wife that I am leaving for the AT on Tuesday and that I won’t be back until late summer? (Should I tell her now, or just wait until just before I leave?)

  1. Yes, Miss Janet will ferry you anywhere you wish, and usually for free.
  2. I’m glad you had a good time at John’s. Some folks do. But the problems inherent in that place have nothing to do with the mere fact that “he is trying to run a business.” Yes, there’s a lot more to it than that, but I lack the time, energy, and inclination to get into it today.
  3. I think you should tell your wife well before you leave and discuss it, but it’s really none of my business.
  4. Have a great summer, and if you get to Erwin, I hope you stop by North Elm St. and discover how great it is at Miss Janet’s.

The basic problem with Johnny is that he is a liar.I have no respect for anybody that tries to disrupt the business practices of an honest person. What I’m referring to is harassment in the form of surprise visits from cops, health inspectors, and claiming she’s running an illegal business.I admire Miss Janet for putting up with it,because she still loves hikers so much.Yes,I’m biased, because I consider Miss Janet a good friend of mine, but their is no reason why 2 hostels can’t survive in the same town.

Somebody said that he was hanging out with Johnny, and Johnny said to him, “would you like a Coke?” He said, “Sure,” so Johnny got him a Coke. The next day the Coke was on his bill.

Also, people were speculating about Johnny selling used socks…

Then there was the guy who put his extra food in the hiker box and when he left he saw it on the shelf with price tags on it. And then there is the sock fetish. EVERYONE that stayed there the two days we were there lost exactly one sock. Raindog figures it’s something else with the used sox. Eew.
