If this is the normal esbit that you are speaking of —i recommend it highly. It is extremely durable and lightweight. The only drawback is the price of the tabs ($6.00 for 12) but ease of use makes it worth it. It burns decent–would recommend a windscreen of some sort–all I can say is that I’m sold—every time I see the alcohol stovers messing with their slightly lighter and slightly cheaper contraption, I smile while I am eating already.
Yahtzee
I’ve used the esbit and found it quite satisfactory. Just be prepared with your water when you light the fuel tab. It will boil 4 cups per tab. The only inconvenience is when you want to just heat up one cup for tea rather than cooking. I believe you can use water to put out a tab, but have not done that.
Bionic Boots
Most long-distance hikers who use Esbit tabs (which are much better than the round hexamine tabs sold in hunting outfitter stores) do not depend on buying them in nearby trail towns.
Instead, they include them in their maildrops, or have a supply in a bounce-box.
You can blow one out if you want to save part after boiling water for tea. I wouldn’t douse one with water…not sure how well it would re-light.
A windscreen is a necessity if you want maximum efficiency. Without a windscreen, it takes much longer for water to boil.
Skyline
I have completed about 1300 miles of the AT so far - half of those miles with an Esbit stove. Two hints. Esbit tabs HATE to be wet. Blow them out; don’t douse them with water. In your pack, store them in a zip-lock or other waterproof item. My windscreen is made of heavy duty alum. foil, rather than the heavier windscreens that come with MSR or other stoves. I resupply the Esbit tabs in weekly maildrops and the foil every 3 weeks or so.
