anybody out there used the 'essence' pack by sixmoons?......i'm sorta thinkin' about a change in packs for our pct hike this year.....i love my mountainsmith 'ghost' because of the EASY ACCESSABILITY to the interior of the pack, but just thinkin' about something a little lighter (also...they don't make the 'ghost' anymore....anybody know where i can get a new one?....i wouldn't mind havin' a new ghost around just in case).....this new sixmoon'essence' pack is intriguing, though.....would love to hear some comments (and/or advice/help)...thanks

I'd make sure your gear is really light, or look at other options. Not to be a sale kill, but I can think of 4 people quickly off the top of my head who used 6 Moons packs on the PCT this summer. 3 of them replaced them with different packs and the other guy was very unhappy, and got off trail after 2 months.

The Tarptents seem to be better made than the packs…But I haven’t used one myself

									Maw-ee,

I too love the Mountainsmith Ghost. Used it on my end-to-end hike of The Long Trail this summer. I bought mine SLIGHTLY used off of ebay just before I left. You may have some luck there if you’re looking to purchase another.

Good luck!

I don't have, and have never used, the Essence pack...but I have the Six Moon Designs Starlight and love it. It's got lots of room, an outside pocket for you sleeping pad (that doubles as the frame) and if you need them, it also has aluminum stays. The shoulder straps adust up/down and you can order it with the right size belt with or without pockets.

I did find that for ME, it carries better if I use the belt as a waist belt.

Maw-ee: you might still find a Ghost on Sierra Trading Post; I saw black models, rather than the gold, listed there a few weeks ago. I had an '06 edition of the Essece pack. Sold it; the internal pad did not provide enough support for me; maybe due to the "open" back design. Just my $0.02.

Since no one seemed to answer your question I think I'll jump in. I have that pack and use it for short summer two or three day trips. I don't think it would work for a thru. It did hold everything, including a bear canister I was unaware that I needed when I climbed Mt Marcy last fall but the pack was bursting at the seams. It looked like a mishappen lump on my back but was comfortable with a foampad for internal padding. A good pack for fast and light three day weekends. Just my 2 cents.

SIX MOONS JUNK
SIX MOONS products are junk! Enough said. If you are thinking about going light in the pack department check out Mountain Laurel Designs. My six moons essence ( I had 2) gave up the ghost every 700 miles. The pack straps actually fell off with loads less than 10lbs! Yet my prophet by Ron Bell at Mountain Laurel has over 2,500 miles of thru hiking on it and it will do 3 times more! Ron makes his products by hand here in the US and stands behind his product (good luck getting SMD to help you out when the essence fails and it will). Prophet to Essence is like Ferrari compared to Ford Fiesta.

I also had problems with SixMoons stuff back in '04, both tents and packs. I hoped the problems were over, but it sounds like they're not.

I’m a Gossamer Gear fan now.
