Eureka Zeus 2 vs MSR Zoid 2 Tents?

Hi there,

Just curious if anyone had any comments/suggestions about either the Eureka Zeus 2 EXO or MSR Zoid 2. We were first interested in the Eureka tent as it’s so light and inexpensive, but weren’t quite sure about the single-wall… And the MRS seems similarly light but with the separate fly, etc.

We’re currently using a Sierra Designs tent, which we love, but which is a bit too big and heavy for us, and for our hike (we’re planning on not this spring but next) we wanted to downsize to a smaller, lighter tent. Any suggestions or experience with either tent would be appreciated!

Thanks and Happy New Year!

I replaced an “original” Clip Flashlight which just wouldn’t take another coat of sealer with the Eureka Zeus 2 in the early fall of '02. I am VERY happy with it’s weight, luxurious interior size, ease of setup, and the price wasn’t bad at all.

There are only two negatives. The first one concerns the zippers on the interior door and the vestibule door. They both are easy to snag, tho after a couple times you can easily find the right touch to avoid that. So really, that’s a non-issue.

The second one is condensation. It’s a single-wall tent, I guess you gotta expect some. There is ventilation but apparently not enough to avoid condensation in all but the least humid environments. Actually, same thing was true with my old Clip–only most of ITS condensation was on the rainfly.

Still, I love the tent. I looked at the Zeus 1, which has a significantly smaller footprint and less headroom. At the time, only $20 cheaper and very few ounces lighter. Decided to splurge and get a much larger tent (Zeus 2) that I could put me, my dawg, and ALL my gear into and still have plenty of room to spare.

The MSR Zoid is probably one of the popular tents. I like the side zipper that allows you to reach everywhere inside the tent without going inside.

Zoid 2.0 is a two person tent. Going solo, I used the Zoid 1.0, the one person size.

When MSR took over from Walrus, they raised the price a fair bit. So, perhaps there are better tents out there for what the charge now. But I was happy with my choice in 2001.

If like Sierra Designs, then check out the Clip Flashlight. That’s has been a very popular tent along the AT.

i own one. i love it. nice and light. would recommend it to anyone; i never have a prob with condensation but i always leave the door open a bit at the top in cold weather to let extra heat out as im a very warm sleeper.

It’s been almost a year now I’m sure they would have made that vestibule better but I’m getting one for winter hiking anyway. Most every review I read is about what I expect for a single wall specially what Skyline says.
The reality of the thing, is its getting darker out every day, like 5;30 dark… So this tent I can set up in both rain and dark and my condensation will freeze and shake all off when I pack up. Sure its not as good as the $600 Expedition Tents. But with a little Chouinard hotroding this $130 tent looks pretty cool to. I’ll have a sold winter tent for all but high exposure buttress camping at least 3 times lighter than my Geodome. Most everyone complains about it being to warm and no breeze and I think they want to camp out in it not get up and go. I like that I see, I can set it up after dark hiking with LED headlamp till 7. Don’t think it don’t get cold. :mad
