Howdy.

I stated last year I was going to do the PCT southbound but snowfall killed that idea (For Me)

But now, I am ready to go, I want to go, Im dying to go…

SO the question is this.

Bare essentials out there in April if starting South and heading North after the party.

For you, as a hiker with some experiance, what would you seriously need, different from the AT, as a start out there on the PCT to get going?

Order Yogi’s book. All you need to know you’ll find there.

Um, I’d get something else, like say the guidebooks and the maps. Unlike the AT, you might actually need them. And, unlike the AT, the maps come with the guidebooks. There are several reasons. First, you’ll want the maps in the Sierra, period. The trail will most likely be under snow and you’ll need to know which little notch you should climb to inorder to get on the other side. Second, there are a lot of good alternate routes, sometimes better than the PCT. You’ll want to take them, the PCT not being the AT. Third, you will frequently find yourself in a maze of trails in SoCal and WA caused by logging or OHVs. It really helps if you have a description of the route and a map. The PCT isn’t blazed like the AT is and you can go for miles without seeing a sign or a blaze.

Yogi will be the first one to tell you: Buy the guides and the data book. This is what I would carry. This is what I did carry in 03.

I agree with Suge. The Guidebooks and Data Book are required on the PCT if you want to have a clue about the trail, water, where to go at junctions, how to find the passes, etc.

The books you need:

  1. The Guidebooks: Maps and Trail descsriptions. Ya need 'em!

  2. The DAtabook: The basics above the above. Useful for scoping out what is ahead, water situation, road crossinge tec.

  3. Yogi’s Book. You don’t absolutely need the book…but why reinvent the wheel? Has much of the info people seem to ask about for the PCT. Makes resupply heck of a lot easier!

I threw together a basic overview for aPCT workshop I did for ALDHA. May server as a good starting point:
