just read in someone’s journal that there is a move to lengthen the AT by 420 miles, extending the southern terminus to somewhere near Birmingham AL. Any truth to this ? thanks

No, the AT isn’t being extended, but there is a plan to extend side trails that connect to the AT. That work is well under way. Read Nimblewill Nomad’s book 10 Million Steps to learn the route he took. The Benton MacKaye and Pinhoti Trails are worth learning about if you like to hike.

I’ve heard tales of AT extensions both north and south. Personally, I’d like to see it. The suggestions I’ve heard for the north have it extending to Mount Jacques Cartier and to Mount Cheaha in the south.
However, these stories seem to be hot air from AT fans who are daydreaming about making the trail longer. I’ve never heard anything approaching an official move to extend the Applachian Trail.

Hikers who are trying to hike the entire eastr coast have connected various trails, Springer to BMT to GA/AL Pinhoti, road walk to FL, FL Trail to Key West. - I don’t believe that the offical AT is planning on moving the southern terminus at this time.
