External Frame Pack

Thanks for the feedback. My pack is an Alpine Design/Boulder, model 1970. I humped full 5 gallon GI cans plus radio batteries up in the White Mountains on two summer Special Forces field excercies, an amazing pack at the time. I use it in recent years to carry a big load of skiis, boots, and camping gear up to Tuckerman’s for my annual spring skiing. I am going to try it out. And yes to whoever has the Optimus. I have a kerosine burner that is 50 years old that still cooks up a storm.

Thanks Folks!

I did my thru in 2001 with an early 70s Kelty external. I did replace the sholder strap/hip belt with current Kelty stuff. I just love it and still use it today.
It may be alittle heavy but, it shure carries nice with a load and with all the pockets, it easy to pack and find stuff.

Just met up with Skywalker and Jericho on the AT in Monson, Maine and hiked a total of 20 miles in the rain with them using my old Alpsport Frame Pack. I am planning on upgrading the pack and using it on my AT thru-hike in 2007. Wish me luck.

Yeah man, my buddy Llama used an external through almost the entire AT in 2003 until it busted. As you get in shape the weight difference won’t matter. Plus, rocking old school is cool.
