The national news keeps reporting record high temps for the mid-west and east. What are some temps that AT hikers are having to deal with?

I was in Palmerton PA yesterday and it was 102 at 4 pm. We left at 5:30am to climb out of there nobo and do the superfund site. We carried about 3-4 liters of water each. Later in the day we took long breaks and drank plenty of water.

We haven't had record highs in NY though it's been hot the last 2 weeks. This week we'll see temp's in the high 80s, and humid. So the hiking is still tough but so are the thru-hikers. I've been hiking on weekends on the AT, it's been in the 90s. The streams are drying out fast. Thankfully you're mostly in the woods in NY but when the AT leaves the shade it's not fun.

In 02 we had only about 10 days of rain (good) low water supply ( bad) the heat in Va averaged 100 everyday. Just take a pace and keep the stride.

speaking of heat, i am very new to trekking and am ready

to undertake the AT on day hikes initially, section hikes
later and, hopefully, try a thru-hike in the not too distant
future. i have a very lame question for any of you veterans.
does anyone carry “heat” on their hikes on the AT? is
carrying “heat” even allowed by law along the AT? have a
concealed carry permit for Virginia, but do not know what the law says about the AT. main thing is, has anyone out there ever been in need of that kind of protection along the trail or is simply a good knife adequate? also, can one
even carry a big hunting knife on the AT? my guess is that
not all of the 14 states allow “heat” to be carried on the
AT. the subject becomes moot, if no one has ever needed that
kind of safety protection in their experience. sorry to ask
a very lame question, but I have found no comments on the
subject in anything i have yet read about hiking the AT.
thanks ahead of time for any useful information.
(i am so new to this i do not even have a trail name yet–
LOL)

Well its been very hot in the Central to southern part of the AT mid 90s to 100 every day. when i summited Katahdan on june 17th it was 83 and wet. now i am going to try and answer the NEW GUYS question when you say heat you mean a gun right. personaly i wouldn't carry one they weight too much and you take the risk of it being taken and be used against you, a small pocket knife surfices. but it is legal to carry one if you have the proper permits for each section especially the "National Parks" call ahead too make sure.
