I don’t know about Maine, but here on the Gulf Coast there still is a little bit of fall color hanging on. Some orange and rust-yellow. The peak was in December.

Here in NH the peak is usually considered to be Columbus Day weekend. So if peak in NH is the first or second week in October I would imagine that Maine is the last two weeks of September.

I finished on October 3rd of 2006. The colors were amazing for basically the last 2-3 weeks of the hike. Especially the closer I got towards Katahdin. Pollywog Gorge was amazing with the colors. Plan on entering Maine around Labor Day, and you will see great colors.

Chairman -
The peak foliage along the AT in Maine varies from year to year, but generally speaking, it falls somewhere between mid September and mid October. I have hiked thru Maine 3 times in this timeframe and would agree with what Catch-Up recommends. When I thru-hike again, i will hope to finish around the end of October/ 1st week of October. Its my favorite time of year for hiking in my favorite state on the AT. Happy Trails!
