I am putting together an FAQ page for distribution at my “going away party” to my friends and family; so, I need your help in coming up with some FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS. The questions have no limit, so if you’ve been asked, I’d like to know. Thanks for your interest and input…

Are you bringing a gun? How long is it gonna take you? Who’s going with you? What are you gonna eat? Aren’t you afraid of bears? Why would you want to do that??

Why don’t you just walk North to South? That way you’ll go downhill the whole way! Hyuk hyuk hyuk. some people are so clever!

What will you wear? Where will you sleep? you’re gonna WALK the whole way? But you’ll sleep in hotels, right? Are you a hippie? Is it like a big love fest or something? How many people are going? How many people make it to the end? Do you think you’ll even get out of Georgia? What kind of movies are you taking along? Won’t you get bored? What do you do? Just walk?

and on and on and on…

We were asked, “How do you get from state to state? By car?” along with many of the others already posted. We stopped counting how many people asked us about Bryson’s book!

I’m in the market for a flip answer to “have you read the bryson book?” (if anyone can suggest one)

I also have gotten the “Have you read that book?” A good one was from this guy at work who was reading these forums over my shoulder one day. He said, “Gates…” (my last name…and no…no relation, so don’t ask…)… Anyway, he said, “Gates, are you really ready to whack a bear across the nose if he comes near you??..My God…you’re actually gonna die.”

Bryson… seems to be everyone’s link to the AT. That is my #1 question asked by others.

FAQ Question:
Q: How long is the trail?
A: This year it’s 2174.1 miles
Q: What do you mean “this year”? It changes?

I always love it after a trail, when I see someone in passing and they ask, “so, how was the trail?” -as if it could be explained in one response (“um… the trail was cool”). I can answer it now, but it took a lot of practice.

My favorite question is: “What are ya gonna do when ya run into those folks from ‘Deliverance’?”

My favorite answer is, “Um, how do y’all know I’m NOT one of those folks from ‘Deliverance’?”

In truth, ‘Deliverance’ was filmed much closer to the Foothills Trail (on my short list of things to do in '04) than the A.T. But the myth continues.

“I’m in the market for a flip answer to “have you read the bryson book?” (if anyone can suggest one)”

How about: No, but I’m taking it with me… in case I run out of toilet paper.

I also have gotten, “Have you ever seen Deliverance?” My friend Trevor was seriously concerned about that.
