Favorite Alaska trails

For those of you who’ve hiked in Alaska, what are your favorite trails and why? Details appreciated.

For those of you who haven’t hiked in Alaska, but are planning to do so, what trail have you chose and why? Again, details appreciated.

By the way, foreigners (Europeans) who come here say that there is no wilderness left in the world like Alaska except Siberia. Any thoughts about that?

Thanks, Conan

hi Conan, i live up here and sure can vouch for the endless wilderness that this state enjoys. it is changing though… they are bent on making it " just like anywhere else "…so hurry… I have done the local trails. Chilkoot is a beauty… but busy, kesugi ridge… sublime…mnt always in your face, tons of wildlife and can be very VERY quiet, chena dome trail… above tree line most of it… gorgeous scenery and also quiet. Not as in your face as the other 2…also pennell… another beauty… and not used much.I long for the brooks range… haven’t been there yet. hey, you can’t lose no matter what ya do…it is all good…

common you can’t be serious. Alaska? Trails? What part of “great alaskan wilderness” didn’t you understand? Next I’m going to see a post for the elevator to the top of half dome, no wait (i got a funnier one) the free piggyback rides to the top of whitney. I heard Alaska trail maintaineers are the BOMB! ok, I’m cracking myself up here. Conan, look buddy, I hate to tell you this but Alaska is soooooo big and has soooooo few people and soooooo little time to to maintain trails before it all gets sucked right back into endless snow pack that the only trails that really stick are the truck trails. you got to head to alaska with the mentality of an adventurer and bushwacker, ready for anything-anytime-anywhere.

There are trails in the Kenai, at Denali State Park and in the area around Fairbanks.

Still, some of the best hiking is where there are no trails. We did a very nice trip in Wrangell St. Elias. It was beautiful. We also hiked in Denali. There were no formal trails, but lots of game paths. It was a good trip.

the Wrangels are truely special . I have done alot of hiking there also. Southeast has a alot of trails … if you put them together you could be out for maybe 200 miles. This state doesn’t want a long trail becuz it doen’t want to rescue any more then it already does. it is a ruff state and we already have enough problems with people getting " lost "…
