I recently discovered Moose Goo - that is a great lunch food. Packs the Carbs, Calories and Fat (good for ya). It tastes very good (peanut butter, honey and corn flour). Goes good with tortillas or crackers. My friend (OregonHikerDave) added sausage and cheese to it.

The Carbs and Calories stick with ya during the day and are not just simple sugar. Hat’s off to the person (Joe) that came up with. http://www.ultralightbackpacker.com/moosegoo.html

Homemade granola!!! Easy, high cal, and CRUNCHY, a texture too often lost on the trail. Plus, it’s a no-cook breakfast that’s a lot more fun than PopTarts.

Favorite granola - Krooger’s Wolf Creek Granola from Lipsmackin’ Backpackin’ cookbook. I tweak the recipe a bit, but essentially it’s orange cranberry with almonds, sunflower seeds, coconut, and pecans or walnuts. Delicious.

It’s easy, high cal, not too sweet, and it’s CRUNCHY, a texture too often lost on the trail. Plus, it’s a no-cook breakfast that’s a lot more enjoyable and nutritious than PopTarts. My favorite granola is Krooger’s Wolf Creek Granola from the Lipsmackin’ Backpackin’ cookbook. It’s awesome.

Comercially available granola is pretty awful in comparison, though. I’d much rather eat a poptart.

Moose Goo and Granola? How about wild mushroom risotto with truffle oil, lobster with clarified butter, and pan seared filet mignon with red wine reduction all washed down with a New Zealand pinot noir? Just to name one of the many first-nite-outta-town dinners. For a lightweight lunch, I like soppresetto sausage, swiss cheese, and commercial fruit snacks.
Of course I eat the dried stuff too. As for that moose goo OregonBeerMan described, I’ve heard of a peanutbutter, honey, and get this, Bacon Fat mixture. Haven’t tried it. I may never eat another poptart on or off the trail.

Now I know why I like day-hiking so much. It’s the restaurants I go to at the end of the day.

Cheese will keep over a week if you pack it properly and get the blocks vs. shredded (less surface area for mold) The sharper the better. Cheese and tortillas are a lightish weight food that onion, jalepenos, garlic, dried veggies (reconstituted), meats, ect. go well with. Cheap too! For breakfast, powdered milk, cold water, and any type of cereal. This is quick, easy, lightweight, easy to find, and cleans out your bowl from the last nights meal.

If you want your cheese to last longer, do NOT touch it with your bacteria laden fingers. I lost a lot of shredded cheese to mold before I figured out that dipping my fingers in the bag was the problem. Oy! a clean spoon took care of that problem. Ok, ok, I know it won’t last forever in the heat, but it sure will help. :tongue

See what you think. Cheers

Vegemite? ugh, I gagged a little just remembering that stuff. But I have to tip my hat, nobody can hold their liquor like an Aussie.

tortilla with peanut butter and Nutella spread rolled around a Snickers bar. that’s 20 miles worth of sugar.
