February hikers

People who hike in February are amazing. That is why we have camp set up at mm 111 with free food and a hot fire for AT hikers in February. (Free shuttles to town too). I was up there this morning and the trail looks pretty bad. There are blowdowns everywhere. I havent seen it so bad in 10 years. Many rhododendrons have come out of the ground! One disadvantage of starting early is that the maintainers havent had a chance to clear the trail yet. We got hit with 4 inches of snow in a couple of hours too. Hey, give it a shot anyway! :sunglasses:

Is this THE Apple? With the dome?? At least, that’s what you had in 2004!

Sure is. Thanks for the kind words. We moved the operation to February since we got overwhelmed last year in March. The dome is sitting up all on the mountain all alone right now since we are socked in here in Franklin with snow and freezing rain. I hope we see some hikers!(The dome has been upgraded since 04. We got a Space Station)

Hello Mr. Apple, March 05 I stumbled into Burnington Gap a broken man after 18 miles of hills ,snow, and cold. Almost dark and nothing left. Hotdogs, hot coco, and hot sweet rolls for breakfast and I left a new man. Thank you so much for your kindness. Paladin game 05

Just wanted to add my thanks as in 07 I came upon your wonderful trail magic after I had spent a freezing night in my tent. I sat and enjoyed the warmth of both your magic and the company for hours waiting for my friends Beach Bum and Duckwalk before pushing on to Cold Spring Shelter! Thanks for your generosity to hikers.

Thanks everybody for the kind words. I went to check the dome today and the freezing rain had crushed my nice Space Staion dome to the ground. All that was left was a big pile of snow with broken tent poles sticking out of it! It is supposedly designed as an Everest Base camp. That would have been ugly if hikers had been sleeping in it. Oh well, everything can be fixed…

Yo Train! How you be? You are welcome any time. You had everyone laughing themselves crazy. A welcome relief.
Well I am at my smashed dome at Burningtown and incredibly 2 thru hikers walk up! (Sunday 1/31) They left Springer in mid January and went thru several snow storms (one while climbing Albert mountain). The blowdowns were so bad on Wayah they had to crawl in their stomachs to get thru. I told the trail boss about it (my boss too) and he said he would try and dispatch a team ASAP. On top of that they told me there are 3 more NOBO’s coming close behind. Good grief! These are some very very tuff folks. APPLE
