Wookie, I agree with Mike- education is a State and Local responsibility NOT a Federal one. What you and many others have fallen for is slick wordsmithing and political babble-Beware. As far as the original question- why are we sponsoring a charity for a government agency? Won’t local citizens eventually pay for the deficit anyway? Sounds futile and misdirected. I’d rather see a focus on who was responsible for this outragous budgetary blunder and hold some accounatability lessons. I really get fed up knowing a majorirty of my local tax dollar goes toward education efforts only to be wasted away by inept education board members.

Then stop your bitchin and run for your School Board. Those people work for nothing and put in lots of hours (in NH at least, some states may pay). I have served on both School Board and Budget Committee and can tell you its not that easy. At the very least you will get an inside look at how screwed up the system is and maybe you can do something to fix it. A large portion of the expenditures are federally mandated for programs that do little to help the average student and take away scarce resources from them. Get involved and make a difference.

I really am not going to talk anymore about this because it doesn’t belong here, so this is the only thing I’ll say: Education is everyone’s responsibility. It’s yours, mine, the county’s, the state’s and the United States’. Each should play a significant role. If you truly want to hold someone accountable for budgetary blunders then vote for Kerry or Nader.

now… back to hiking stuff

My point exactly and I’m glad we agree…the system is screwed up hence my distain for inept school board members who perpetuate the problem of wasted tax dollars. Perhaps you managed to do some good during your term on the board and committee. I applaud if you did. Now, not everyone can “get involved” to the degree you propose nor is it appropriate. I do however vote, expose wasteful spending, and exercise free speech. Advocacy comes in many forms my friend. I appreciate the banter.
